3M Treatment Tracking App

I led a comprehensive redesign and brand refresh to transform a complex clinical app into an intuitive patient experience. Partnering with stakeholders to align business requirements with user needs, I executed the interaction design, data visualizations, and UI. Through rigorous prototyping and usability testing, the final product successfully boosted user motivation and drove key engagement behaviors.
The 3M Treatment Tracking app helps patients monitor aligner wear time, take progress photos and see their stats and earned badges.
My Role
• UX Strategy & Research: Competitive analysis, user interviews, and heuristic evaluation.
• Design & Execution: Interaction design, UI design, and prototyping.
• Validation: Usability testing and stakeholder alignment.
Challenges
The primary challenge was overcoming a fragmented user experience and an outdated visual identity that hindered patient engagement. The application suffered from poor usability and lacked brand cohesion. Success required balancing technical requirements with psychological motivation factors—transforming a difficult-to-navigate tool into a seamless, behavior-driving experience that simplified dense clinical data through intuitive visualization.
Process & Methods
Step 1: Discovery & Evaluation
I began by identifying usability friction points and evaluating the First-Time User Experience (FTUE).
Methods:
Heuristic Evaluation and FTUE Audit
• Competitive Analysis: I analyzed healthcare, fitness, and habit-tracking apps to identify best-in-class patterns for data display, user feedback, and gamification.

Step 2: Strategy & Prioritization
Working with stakeholders, I utilized a Feature Matrix to define project scope based on effort and value. I then developed wireframes and user flows to document systemic UX improvements.
Opportunities Identified: Simplified navigation, enhanced data visualization, updated notification logic, and a streamlined sign-in process.

Interaction & UI Design
I executed a visual overhaul centered on the 3M brand identity, leveraging modern data visualization trends to make patient progress feel tangible and inspiring.
• Ideation: Created mood boards and research-driven data models to fuel design exploration and visual strategy.
• Wireframing: Designed the core architecture, user flows, and interaction patterns to establish a seamless navigational structure.
• Systems Thinking: Leveraged the 3M Oral Care design system to ensure brand integrity while modernizing UI screens for a more sophisticated, engaging feel.
• UI Design: Executed high-fidelity interface designs for all application screens, prioritizing accessibility and aesthetic cohesion.

Step 4: Usability Testing
Despite a limited budget and timeline, I conducted moderated testing with six participants to validate the redesign.
• Methods: Card sorting, physical model reviews, and digital prototype testing
• Outcome: Prioritized findings via Optimal Workshop, leading to critical iterative design refinements before launch.

Results - App Redesign

The redesign significantly improved usability, session rates, and brand integrity.

Brand Alignment: Integrated the new 3M Clarity design system.
Data Clarity: Implemented modern visualization trends to make stats actionable.
Motivation: Improved feedback messaging and progress tracking, directly increasing patient motivational factors and app enjoyment.
Teledentistry Integration
When COVID-19 halted in-person orthodontic visits, I spearheaded new features to bridge the gap between the 3M Oral Care Portal and the Treatment Tracking App. This allowed for a "virtual office" experience during a global shutdown.

Impact & Features
Virtual Monitoring: Developed features for patients to upload progress videos and photos, allowing doctors to track alignment against prescribed treatment plans.
Real-Time Communication: Created a 2-way messaging system for direct doctor-patient interaction, reducing the need for physical office visits.
Record Sharing: Enabled orthodontists to share 3D treatment videos and records directly with patients to maintain engagement and treatment compliance.
